Step up to the Mic – Discover Your Platform

Michael Hyatt Platform Book CoverI have a been a follower of Michael Hyatt for about a year and have been enchanted by his teachings in productivity, blogging, and leadership. Michael is able to take complex ideas and make them easy to understand for even the most non-technical people.

When he introduced Platform: Get Noticed in a Noisy World, I was genuinely interested in his process for growing a loyal band of followers, or as he refers to them, a “tribe”. The tribe consists of people that not only follow you, but are willing to be brand ambassadors for you and/or your company. Sure, anyone can have 100,000 followers, but Michael preaches “quality vs. quantity.”

Marketing is no longer about generating transactions; it is about building relationships

Following the steps he provided, Platform provides a great guide for cutting through the “noise” and developing a platform that will help grow the awareness of a particular product, service, or brand. Think about how powerful that idea is. With millions of people vying for attention via social media and other low/no cost channels, it will take time and effort to carve out your niche. Michael admitted that it took him years to develop his platform.

Through trial and error, he’s found a methodology that has worked for him and Platform provides the road map for building a successful enterprise. Although your results may vary, he gets into the nitty gritty detail of blogging, using social media and other tools to grow your brand or increase the exposure for your particular endeavor. He details when to use them, when not to use them, and how to leverage them for success.

You can either accept reality as it is or create it as you wish it to be

The book is an exceptionally easy read and is thoughtfully organized, allowing the reader to read cover to cover or by picking and choosing topics that are of particular interest. I found the chapters on Creating a Compelling Product, Building a Home Base, and Expanding Your Reach to be especially interesting. If you’re not using Twitter, Michael explains how to get up and running quickly.

The thought of creating a platform may seem like a daunting task. It is and will be a challenge for sure. In fact, Michael challenges the reader with a series of questions when facing a daunting task:

What would accomplishing this make possible?

What would it make possible for your business, cause, or campaign?

What would it make possible for you?

It is important to note that Platform is not a panacea for all things pertaining to your brand and that your results may vary. However, with laser like focus, dedication, and consistency, it’s not outside the realm of possibility to achieve success.

Platform is a great resource for anyone looking to expand their sphere of influence or to get a better understanding of utilizing social media and other marketing tools. Whether you’re a novice or a seasoned professional, Platform offers a variety of tips and advice that can be applied to any situation, big or small.
