It’s Baseball Season: 3 Awesome Apps for the Ultimate MLB Fan

With the return of Major League Baseball comes the return of youthful optimism for many of us, carrying with it dreams of our hometown (or favorite) teams making the playoffs for a run toward the Fall Classic. Unlike other sports, the MLB season lasts in excess of six months providing ample opportunity for us fans to follow our teams throughout the season. For some of us, it can be a very long season while for others, it is filled with the competitive excitement that is baseball and its pennant chase. Since my favorite team is the San Diego Padres, I have a feeling I’m going to be in for a long season. I digress. In any event, regardless of your team loyalties, there are many ways to connect and follow your favorite teams. Some of these ways include Facebook pages, team blogs, Twitter, and a wide assortment of apps.

Here are five awesome apps that will help you connect with your favorite team:

Probably the best mobile app for any professional sports league, the MLB At Bat app provides news, scores, statistics and more for all of baseball. You can also set your favorite MLB teams and have them appear front and center on the home screen. The app will also alert you to game starts, game ends, and scoring changes via push notifications.

MLB At Bat provides access to the home and away radio broadcasts (subscription required) and also access to MLB.TV (subscription required), allowing you to watch your team’s out of market broadcasts. MLB At Bat is a free download and the enhanced features are available for a modest subscription billed monthly or for the season. MLB At Bat is available for iPhone, iPad, and Android devices. Here’s another fantastic app provided by MLB which really enhances the fan’s experience at the ballpark. It’s location enabled, allowing you to locate the baseball stadium you’re at based on your proximity. You can access the home team’s schedule, an interactive seating chart to find the closest restrooms, food stands, etc., and even learn about the music the players use for their walk up to the plate fo their at bat as well as other stadium anthems. The “At The Ballpark” app features a fan guide and other ways to get social including checking-in. This is a fantastic free app available for all of the major cell phone platforms. ESPN Scorecenter

From the granddaddy of all things sports, ESPN’s Scorecenter app mirrors what the network offers on Sportscenter. Complete with headline news, video clips, the ability to set your favorite sports or teams, and notifications of when there’s scoring in your favorite team’s game, the Scorecenter app keeps you updated on all things sports.
